About me
Dominic Drader
I’ve always liked figuring out how things work. These days, I’m just as interested in how they make people feel.
I’m Dom, a Media Studies student at UBC Okanagan who began in engineering. My interests stretch across creative coding, light, sound, photography and the small details that make an experience feel welcoming.
Some of my favourite work happens when those things meet: programming a gym-sized Pac-Man game, experimenting with a wall that could respond to movement, or imagining a character that makes checking in feel like being recognised.
Working with kids and families has given me plenty to notice. A confusing process can shape someone’s whole arrival. So can a friendly greeting. I want to bring that attention to the things I make.
I’m usually tinkering with something. Often with a coffee nearby.
what I'm exploring
A few interests that keep finding their way into my projects.
1. Spaces that respond
Light and sound that guide an experience
Projection and physical interaction
Spaces that invite people to explore
Turning ordinary rooms into something unexpected
2. Playful interaction
Creative coding and small experiments
Characters with personality
Feedback that makes you want to try again
Finding room for play in everyday tasks
3. Everyday systems
Registration and check-in that make sense
Tools for the people using them
Designing with children and families in mind
Clear, welcoming communication
4. Visual storytelling
Photography built around an idea
Meaning in ordinary objects
Composition, lighting and colour
Making a complex thought easy to see

A little more human
A few things you won’t get from my résumé.
Pour-over coffee
A small ritual I’ll happily make more complicated than it needs to be.
Taking photos
Usually of something ordinary that made me look twice.
Bouldering
A puzzle I get to solve with my whole body.
Living tiny
A small home, a folding bed and a lot of opinions about how a space could work better.
Where I've been
My path runs through engineering, live production, administration and working with kids. Each has taught me something about the people using a space or a system.
